At the State Opening of the new 2010-11 session of Parliament today, the Queen made a short but clear statement on the Government’s position on eliminating the threat from nuclear weapons.
The Queen stated: “My Government will work to reduce the threat from nuclear weapons and nuclear proliferation including the serious international concerns posed by Iran’s nuclear programme.”
The speech emphasized the Coalition’s new position on non-proliferation and Iran. The Coalition will pursue UN sanctions on Iran in response to that country’s nuclear programme, and look to the EU to support these measures. A vote will be put to the UN Security Council on sanctions in June.
The sanctions policy will only be reviewed in light of any Iranian decision to engage in talks with the so-called E3+3 group of countries of the UK, France, Germany, China, Russia and the USA.
