New Questions on the Nuclear Deterrent

25th November saw two questions put to the government concening the Vanguard Class submarines that carry Britain’s nuclear deterrent and the estimated cost of their replacement.

Bernard Jenkin MP wrote to the Secretary of State for Defence to ask what assessment he has made of whether the incorporation of the Core H reactor into the Vanguard-class submarines during their period of long overhaul and refuelling will be sufficient to cover the additional nine years of expected service life of the platform. Michael Dugher MP has written to Prime Minister David Cameron to ask (1) whether the National Security Council has made a recent (a) estimate of the cumulative private finance initiative liabilities of the Ministry of Defence to 2020 and (b) impact assessment on the effects of those liabilities of that Department’s capacity to fund the Trident successor programme;

(2) whether the National Security Council has made a recent estimate of the level of unfunded liabilities in the long-term costings of the Ministry of Defence attributable to the Government’s commitment to the Trident successor programme; and if he will make a statement.
