Lord West joins Top Level Group

Admiral Lord West of Spitheat has joined the Top Level Group.

Lord West held several high level positions in the Royal Navy. He was the former commander of the frigate HMS ARDENT sunk in the Falkland Islands and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his part in the action. He also served three years as head of Naval Intelligence and three years as Chief of Defence Intelligence. He was Commander-in-Chief Fleet for the invasion of Afghanistan.

He was First Sea Lord for the invasion of Iraq and widening of Afghanistan operations. He advised both Conservatives and Labour on defence and foreign policy before, in July 2007, becoming the Minister responsible for national security and counter-terrorism as well as cyber security. He left government when the coalition formed.
