On 29 January 2010, Pugwash and the Universtiy of Milan hosted a conference in Milan entitled “Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation: What role might Europe play in light of the upcoming NPT Review Conference”. Over 40 participents from 13 countries attended including former defence and foreign ministers, current and former international disarmament diplomats and other scientific and policy experts. Des Browne from the Top Level Group attended.
Among the topics discussed were:

Promote nuclear disarmament by involving the states that are not party to the NPT;
Make progress in the establishment of a zone free of WMD’s in the Middle East and particularly of a nuclear weapons-free zone;
Stregthen the IAEA and international monitoring and control regime;
and ensure the right of all member-states to develop nuclear activities for civilian purposes.
